This time last year, me and the boy jetted off to the beautiful Morocco on a Surf and Yoga Retreat at Surf Maroc in Taghazout. Following my India trip to Soul and Surf, I was keen to go on more active holidays and Surf Maroc came highly recommended. We flew into Agadir on super cheap easy jet flights, and were picked up by the surf maroc team to journey 25 mins along the coast line to Villa Mandala, Surf Maroc’s relaxing retreat.
We arrived to meet our companions for the week, mostly Europeans with stressful city jobs, and settled in to the first evening of the most wonderful food I have ever had on holiday. The following day the retreat formally started with a two hour yoga session to start the day followed by a wonderful ( and much needed brunch).
We would then jet off to various surf breaks along the coast with two fantastic surf instructors. Attempt to surf all afternoon then return to the Villa for a second 2 hour yoga session, delicious supper and an early night.
Just look and this wonderful food! Its so good they gave us all a cook book with the recipes in at the end of the week!
The Low Down
This surf and yoga retreat is not for the faint hearted. Its intense. The yoga was taken by 3 different instructors, all with a different style. But to be honest, I found it pretty tough. I wouldn’t call myself a yogi, but I do yoga every week and had 1 previous surf yoga retreat under my belt. This did feel in another league, and at points I did feel a little helpless. The instructors said the sessions were all optional and there was no pressure to do everything, but no one else on the retreat ever missed a session so it was a bit of a challenge not to feel hugely guilty rocking up to brunch after a lie in.
The surf was great, and maybe better than in India. The instructors were patient and encouraging. The beaches were great. No strong currents or enormous waves. I actually managed to stand up and stay up this time.
The food and the villa were wonderful, healthy, nutritious, filling, just wonderful.
Overall I did enjoy my week at Surf Maroc Yoga Retreat, I certaining lost weigh, felt toned and strong after 4 hours of yoga and 3 hours of surfing each day. However it was an intense week and I came back exhausted, not relaxed.
